Liberec is situated in the North Bohemia in the valley between the Ještěd Ridge and the Jizera Mountains. Liberec was first mentioned in 1352, later it changed into a feudal town, its rights were confirmed by Emperor Rudolf II. in 1577.

The most important changes proceeded in the second half of the 18th century. At that time, the centre of Liberec consisted of brick houses in the classical style. The beginning of the 19th century brought the growth of the textile industry. At that time Liberec was, after Prague, the second biggest town in Bohemia. Nowadays, Liberec offers many interesting sites – LiberecTown hall, Theatre of F. X. Šalda, museum, the Town gallery and other interesting buildings. From modern architecture you can see the dominant of Liberec - Ještěd. It is an original construction in the shape of a rotating hyperboloid built on the hill in the height of 1012m.

Liberec is a centre of sports and culture. There are many skiing areas around Liberec, both at Ještěd and Bedřichov in Jizera mountains. The most known entertainment centre is Babylon, with its Aquapark and other activities.

The building of the Jested tower is a unique piece of architecture and definitely  dominates whole city. It was built in the second half of the 1960s as designed by architect K. Hubacek who received the Perret’s Prize of the International Union of Architects for it. The overall interior concept meets criteria of both common tourist visitors and the most demanding guests.

The family entertainment änd shopping complex Babylon has become most recent domination on the field of Liberec entertainment. The most popular attraction is theme-based Aquapark, the first of its kind in Czech republic. You can find here set of pools, water slides, saunas, whirpools and other atractions in original setting of antique-style bath.


iqparkVery interesting part of Babylon centre is IQ Park. iQpark is an interactive entertainment-educational centre situated in the former facility of the State textile research institute in Liberec . It is the first of its kind in the Czech Republic using games and entertaining interactive utilities as a means of education and learning. It comes up after the fashion of world’s “science centers” and draws from concepts verified by them offering unstrained ways of education and learning by means of interactive entertaining utilities [schola ludus (learning with games)]. It incorporates more than a hundred interactive exhibits. The interactivity, educational, entertaining, and attractiveness are the basic requirements of the exhibits.

 

Liberecký bazén

bazen-liberecV „mokré zóně“ najdete mimo závodního 50 m bazénu s osmi dráhami, skokanskou sekcí s prknem 1 a 3m a skokanskou věží 5m. Teplota vody se pohybuje mezi příjemnými 25.5 až 26 stupni, a hloubkou bazénu od 1.35m do 3.80m. Také dětský výukový bazén s maximální hloubkou 0,7 m a teplotou vody 28 stupňů, určený pro děti starší tří let. Je zde také dětské brouzdaliště s vířivkou vyhřátou na 28,5 stupně a hloubkou 30centimetrů. Pro děti od mínus devět měsíců, vodní hříbek a masážní trysky.Nemůžete minout ani nejdelší tobogan mezi Mnichovem a Moskvou. Je dlouhý 150 metrů a 35 centimetrů a je určen pro návštěvníky od 6ti do 99 let. v prostorech bazénu najdete pochopitelně i skvělou saunu, páru a welnes.

 

The ZOO in Liberec

zooThe Liberec Zoo is the oldest in the area of former Czechoslovakia. It was founded in 1919. It was used in part as the winter quarters for circus animals. Long after WWII, when Jiří Badalec was appointed the director, an essential modernization of the garden started.

The Liberec Zoo breeds more than 170 species with an overall number of 955 individuals. Out of these, 294 animals are registered in different European conservation programmes as EEP, ESB and RDB. These national programmes try to save species facing extinction. The treaty CITES concerning the international market of endangered species has the same aim.

Only in the Liberec Zoo you can see the largest breeding group of chimpanzees in the Czech Republic. In this group there are 4 males and 6 females. You can see the chimpanzees in any weather and even in winter they are let out to their outdoor enclosure.

The White Bengal Tiger (panthera tigris tigris) can be seen only in the Liberec Zoo within the Czech Republic. This species of tiger has white fur with black stripes and you can recognize it thanks to its beautiful blue eyes as well.

Botanical Garden

botanicka zahradaThe Botanical Garden in Liberec (completely rebuilt from 1995 to 2000) comprises nine glasshouses for visitors (with a total area of 3,000 m² and 13 exhibition themes), nine plantation glasshouses and a large exterior terrain. It continues the legacy of a botanical garden established in 1876 by the Verein der Naturfreunde ("Society of Friends of Nature") on a nearby site and it is therefore considered the oldest one in the Czech Republic.
